BMW is conducting a voluntary safety recall of certain model year 2008-2011 5-Series, 5-Series Gran Turismo, 7-Series, X5, and X6 vehicles equipped with eight- or twelve-cylinder turbocharged engines for a faulty electric auxiliary water pump.

A notice on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) site lists the potential number of affected vehicles at 32,084. Documents from BMW include the following breakdown of affected vehicles: 2,606 5-Series, 1,787 5-Series Gran Turismo, 18,195 7-Series (including Alpina B7), 4,309 X5 and 5,187 X6.

At issue is the circuit board for the electric auxiliary water pump, which, under certain conditions, can overheat. This could lead to a smoldering of the pump or a fire in the engine compartment or the vehicle.

The automaker says it has not received any reports, nor is it aware of, any accidents or injuries related to this issue.

BMW will notify owners of affected vehicles and dealers will replace the auxiliary water pump free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during November 2011.

In the meantime, owners of 2008-2011 BMW 5-Series, 5-Series Gran Turismo, 7-Series, X5 and X6 models with questions or concerns may contact BMW at 1-800-525-7417.

Alternatively, owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or go to http://www.safercar.gov.  Refer to the NHTSA Campaign ID No. 11V521000.
